CityGuide Potsdam

Potsdam is home to a wealth of Prussian palaces and gardens including Sanssouci and the Cecilienhof, the city featuring some of Germany’s most stunning architecture. It also has much to offer in cultural terms what with a variety of contemporary, historical and independent performances being hosted in the Hans Otto theatre, the palace theatre, the Nikolaisaal, the Waschhaus and in many other smaller establishments. A number of festivals and events such as the Potsdam Hofkonzerte in Sanssouci, the Potsdam Musikfestspiele as well as rock and jazz concerts attract many visitors from all over the world annually. The film museum and the recently established museum of Prussian and Brandenburg history are well worth seeing as are the more traditional museums such as the municipal museum and the museum of natural history. The original Babelsberg film premises features Europe’s oldest film studio which produced classic UfA and DEFA films including the “Feuerzangenbowle” and “Der Blaue Engel”. Today television productions - “Gute Zeiten Schlechte Zeiten” for instance - as well as films such “Sonnenallee” are filmed here. It is no wonder that celebrities including several international fashion designers, actors and entertainers have taken up residence in this beautiful former Prussian capital.
