CityGuide Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s second largest city. It also considered as its musical capital since the premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” in 1986 and upholds this tradition to the present day with performances such as “Ich war noch niemals in New York”, “Lion King” and “Dirty Dancing”. Hamburg has more than this to offer in cultural terms however, featuring two superb state theatres as well as countless private playhouses and over a hundred museums. There are also a number of established concert houses such as the Laieszhalle and the opening of the Elb Philharmonic in 2010 is eagerly awaited. Germany’s first public opera house was established in Hamburg in 1678, making it a true city of culture. The Hamburg State Opera, the venue where Montserrat Caballé began her international career, has achieved much international acclaim, housing one of the best ballet ensembles in the world.
