CityGuide Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf has a good reputation for culture, art and modern architecture. Indeed, it has always been an important centre of painting; the Düsseldorf school was very influential in the 19th century. The city features internationally acclaimed museums, North Rhine-Westphalia’s art collection and the art academy as well as many galleries which exhibit both young and older artists. In terms of performing arts the German Rhine opera features Germany’s largest opera ensemble and hosts operas, operettas and ballets whilst the playhouse’s theatre performances take place on 4 different stages. The Komödchen is Germany’s oldest cabaret theatre; indeed, many performers started their career here. Düsseldorf also boasts the Tonhalle which has outstanding acoustics and hosts concerts and other musical events. Everyone can find the music they like; many artists are from this provincial capital including Marius Müller-Westernhagen who also likes to praise Düsseldorf in his songs as well as the folk music star Heino, creating an eclectic mix of styles. Carnival is also a popular celebration. When the festivities get too much strolling around the beautiful scenery - the palace of Bensberg for instance - provides a relaxing alternative.
