The Heussenstamm foundation embraces both tradition and change. It was first founded by the mayor of Frankfurt, Dr. Karl Moritz Heussenstamm, almost a century ago and is the city’s oldest and most important foundation, demonstrating how much time and money citizens are prepared to invest in Frankfurt and its inhabitants as well as standing for community spirit. The foundation provides care for the elderly and promotes local artists. It is run by a full-time managing director in order to keep things running smoothly. Roswitha Girst has been in this position for many years and reports to the cultural and social department head of Frankfurt as well as to six citizens elected by the municipal authorities including a member of the Jewish society. Many people work for the foundation on a voluntary basis. The committee decides on the issues that are to be addressed in the upcoming programme whilst a jury decides which artists’ works are to feature in the monthly exhibition.
