This museum is the world’s first film museum and was founded in 1984, documenting the history of this art form on six floors. The cinema forms the museum’s centre, the programme including retrospectives, documentaries, avant-garde films, silent films with piano music and portraits of directors, actors and countries as well as premieres and festivals. The permanent exhibition documents the prehistory and early history of cinema whilst also detailing how a film is actually made. In addition, the museum organises four to five special exhibitions annually on German film history, individual stars, directors and genres as well as film architecture, costume and film photography. Finally, the German film museum also features an archive, several collections, a comprehensive library and a video store.
