Many museums in Munich feature remarkable visual art collections from the Middle Ages through to the modern age, the Old and the New Pinacotheca boasting particularly impressive ones. The German Museum focuses more on natural history whilst the Glyptothek houses a collection dating back to the antiquity. Furthermore, temporary exhibitions are dotted all around the city in particular in the Kunsthalle and the Literaturhaus. Munich also has an excellent reputation when it comes to stage performances: the Bavarian State Opera hosts a number of exciting modern dramatizations and classical operas; the State Theatre provides exceptional performances and the Kammerspiele puts on thrilling shows and musicals. Moreover, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Munich has achieved international acclaim with its concerts, dramatically influencing the city’s music scene whilst folk music is big here too. Bavaria’s provincial capital also has a wealth of jazz bars which are well frequented by both young and older crowds. Munich hosts a number of film festivals as well as featuring many cinemas and being involved in numerous T.V. productions, making it a veritable media stronghold.
